Jesus is carried toward the dark opening of a rock-hewn tomb after the crucifixion, His body wrapped in burial linen and borne with reverent care by richly robed men. At the entrance, a large round stone stands ready to seal the grave, while mourners and women disciples approach along the hillside path. The scene reflects the Gospel burial, when Joseph of Arimathea received the body of Jesus and laid Him in a new tomb cut in the rock, with the women watching where He was placed. The open tomb speaks of death and sorrow on Good Friday, yet in Christian teaching it also prepares the viewer for the coming witness of Easter morning: the grave that receives Christ will not be able to hold Him.
