Jesus hangs upon the cross at Calvary, crowned with thorns and reaching toward the crucified thief beside Him. The condemned man is bound to his own wooden cross, turning his face toward Christ in the final moments of the Passion. The scene centers on the promise Jesus gave to the repentant criminal: mercy was not withheld at the edge of death, and salvation came through faith in the crucified King.

Rooted in Luke 23:39-43, the artwork portrays the grace-filled exchange often called the promise of paradise. While one thief mocked, the other confessed his guilt and appealed to Jesus, saying, “remember me.” Christ’s answer reveals the gospel with striking clarity: entrance into God’s kingdom rests on His saving authority, not human merit.
